Donna Fortenberry ~ aka "Mom"
Donna rode her first horse at he age of 3 on her uncle's cattle ranch and we haven't been able to keep her off of them since then. As a teenager, much to the surprise of her "city dwelling" parents, she decided to purchase her first horse. She then spent the next several years in the playday circuit in west Texas and working on the local ranches breaking young stock.
Her favorite mount through most of these years was a little Palomino named Shawn'o. Shawn was known throughout west Texas as the little scrub horse that beat the pants off of everyone in speed events, as well as the little dickens that liked to break loose from the trailer and go knock on the door of the concession stand. His performance record and endurance was really no surprise if you took a look at his parents, his dam was a Mustang named Blondy and his sire was a palomino son of Three Bars out of Big Springs Texas. (If anyone knows the name of a Stallion fitting that description, I would love to know who he was, Mom has forgotten over the years.)

Tracie Fortenberry ~ aka "The kid that got us into this mess!"
Following in Mom's hoof prints, about 1980, Tracie hit the playdays on Shawn, now almost 20. Now a whole new generation of playdayers knew him as the little scrub horse beating their pure bred stock!
During this time, one of the other geldings, an appendix papered Quarter Horse, had a foot injury and Tracie was used to add a tiny bit of weight as the horse exercised. Much to Donna's displeasure, the gelding decided that Tracie was his baby...all 16'2 hands of him! Needless to say, all the "kid's" horses offered up over the next several years found it hard to stack up. |

Tracie's love of Appaloosas also came about during these early years. As a Christmas present in a horse household, the ever present Breyer horse appeared in the early 1980's. Since that time, Tracie has planned to "grow up and raise Appaloosas". So if you look at the history, really this "mess we got into" is all laid at the feet of the person that purchased that Breyer so many years ago! |
