Eli is a grade appaloosa gelding that joined our family in 1996. At the time, he was about 7 or 8 years old.
We had started the search for a big stout gelding for trail riding and we ran across Eli. After going back several time for "test drives" and quite a bit of negotiation about his price, we finally took him home.
He was bought for the teenage brother at the time to ride, but quickly showed that "HIS" person was Mom... and that was that. Just a steady, reliable mild mannered gelding, she could then be found most afternoons riding down the road, usually with 8 year old Travis on behind her.
On one such occasion, a passing truck slowed, then stopped to come back and talk with her. "Is that horse's name ELI?" came the question, with a hesitant, "Yes" back from Mom. "And you have that baby up there with you!? Don' t you know who that horse is?!"
That is when we found out Eli's history. Apparently, he had been sold from Cowboy to Cowboy all over the county as "That Darn STUBBORN Appaloosa!" having kicked and stomped, and bucked off every one of them.
Now to this day, Eli has NEVER shown that side in the least with any of us. He has been a perfect gentleman, and even gone out of his way to protect us on occasion to keep us from being stepped on by other horses. Now we have included in the photos above the view you are most likely to see when you enter his pen.... his backside. Now this to a stranger may seem threatening... but in reality he is presenting the portion that he prefers to be scratched :-) !
Now a person should pay attention when the backside is presented. One story always surfaces when explaining this to visitors. During daily chores, Tracie was "too busy" to stop and scratch a moment, and he slowly kept creeping back to make sure that he was within reach.... soon.... Tracie found herself head over heals, pushed right on over into the water tank!
